Light and bright
‘FRESH AND YOUTHFUL’ DESIGNS FEATURED IN BRESLAU LISA VAN DE VEN
“I wanted to do something that was really fresh and youthful,” interior designer Andrew Pike says of the Modern Farmhouse model home he designed at Empire Riverland. To accomplish that, the principal designer with Andrew Pike Interiors went light and bright in the four-bedroom Breslau house. Texture takes centre stage against the neutral palette of white, pale grey and light woods, while slipcovered furniture and durable wood laminate flooring add to the family-friendly feel. “I think that the Modern Farmhouse style is all about being cozy without being cluttered,” adds Sue MacKay, Empire Communities’ vice president of marketing. Homes at Riverland range from 1,345 to 3,238 square feet and start in the mid-$400,000s. The sales office is at 190 Woolwich St. S., Breslau, and open Monday to Thursday from 1 to 7 p.m. and weekends from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 519-213-1190 or visit empireriverland.com.

Matching Ikea sofas flank the living room fireplace, offering plenty of space to kick back and get comfortable. The casual sofas feature light wood legs and washable slipcovers, while accent cushions add texture. “Although the pillows are neutral they’re really interesting to look at and touch,” Pike says.

A contemporary fireplace is the living room focal point, while a wallpaper surround creates the appearance of distressed wood. Also meant to draw the eye, the room’s light fixture adds a contemporary accent. “Just that hint of chrome looks perfect in the space,” Pike adds.

“The entire furniture package in this house is all versions of white, pale grey and light wood,” Pike says, which made this desk from Structube the perfect find. The contemporary slim-lined desk offers just enough space to work at home in the upstairs bedroomturned-office.

By featuring a smaller desk, Pike left room in the office for a reading nook. The slipcovered armchair offers a comfy place to relax, while an asymmetrical light wood bookshelf pops against the white wall. “It’s just slightly different, but doesn’t make the space feel frenetic,” Pike says.
