Reeves, Winter to reprise goofy comic roles
It’s been three decades since Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventures was released, but thanks to the current trend of remakes and reboots, it’s about to get a third instalment. The news was announced at the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday, with stars Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter confirmed to reprise their roles as Ted and Bill, respectively. The movie, which has long been rumoured, will be titled Bill and Ted Face the Music. It will follow the goofy duo in middle age as they juggle family and continue to try and write the perfect song after a visitor from the future warns them it’s the only way to save the world. Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon, will be returning to write the screenplay, with Dean Parisot (Galaxy Quest, Red 2) set to direct. Oh, and Steven Soderbergh will be producing, lending the project a new bit of weight.
In a statement, Reeves and Winter said: “We couldn’t be more excited to get the whole band back together again. Chris and Ed wrote an amazing script, and with Dean at the helm we’ve got a dream team!”
Although it finally found its green light, the project has been in development hell for several years. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Solomon said: “We’ve been to the altar a few times. We get rejected right about the ‘now you may kiss the bride’ part of it.”
Winter added: “The whole trajectory of getting the next one off the ground has been pretty much exactly like the experience of getting the original. Going to every studio, and they’re like, ‘What the eff is this?’ It’s this kind of independent spirit, and the films have an anachronistic quality to them that’s a big part of what they are, fundamentally. I’m really happy that this one is the same. It doesn’t feel like some stale knock-off that a studio would have immediately gone, ‘Oh, this feels right. We have rebranded very successfully.’ ”
The film is currently in pre-production and has yet to announce a release date.
