U.K. CHAIN CAUGHT SERVING UNDERSIZED PINTS OF BEER
This summer is shaping up to be less than stellar for British beer drinkers. A U.K.-wide carbon dioxide shortage still threatens the supply of carbonated beverages And now, a “pint scam” has resulted in the seizure of undersized glassware, The Drinks Business reports. An investigation by Trading Standards in Birmingham found that an unnamed national restaurant chain was
using glasses that were 8.1 mL (roughly 1 ¾ teaspoons) shy of an actual pint (568 mL). In the U.K., draft beer and cider must exclusively be sold “in measures of a third, half, or two-thirds of a pint, or multiples of half a pint,” according to The Independent. Names were not disclosed “because the case did not result in a prosecution,” the BBC reports.
