Rex rides roughshod

-

Re: We’re all doomed, Rex Murphy; July 21

Rex Murphy makes it clear that environmental writers like John Scranton perpetuate a narrative of fear in today’s media.

It would be foolish to argue otherwise.

The idea that environmental deterioration could make our world uninhabitable in the very near future is scary. As someone only just entering my 20s, this is a particularly frightening thought.

That being said, while Murphy makes this strong argument, he fails to refute or even address the frightening beliefs Scranton spreads. Murphy makes no comment on the state of our environment, nor its marked decline in recent decades.

To make a convincing counter-argument, a columnist must provide just that: an opposing argument on the issue, not just the person writing it. Regardless of Scranton’s qualities, Murphy’s column leaves this argument unrefuted, and the question remains: Is environmental doom creeping ever closer?

I wish Rex Murphy would not waste so much ink tossing around clever phrases like confetti, playing the “silver-tongued devil,” rather than getting to the point. No one’s impressed.

But that’s just me, a meat-and-potatoes reader.
