Carter taking directions from his Uncle Butch

TORONTO • One of the biggest influences on Duron Carter’s life is a name familiar to Canadian sports fans: Butch Carter.

It was Carter’s uncle who helped nurture the likes of Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady when Butch served as head coach of the Toronto Raptors.

“He’s been my No. 1 tour guide in Toronto,” Carter said of Butch, who had his nephew up to the family’s cottage. “I’ve been hanging out with him all week. He’s been around here for 20 years and it’s great to have him here. He knows the area, where to eat, just everything about Toronto. Whenever I have a need, I’ ll go to him.”

Butch wants to see his nephew be a man, a leader in a structured environment where Carter, the son of NFL Hall of Famer Cris Carter, will have a chance to succeed. Twitter is no longer part of Carter’s life — likely at the urging of his uncle.

As an Argo, Carter’s potential nurturer will be Marc Trestman, who does not put any player above the team.

Carter is on the same page as Trestman when the Argos head coach stressed the importance of leadership.

Carter won’t play Labour Day in Hamilton and Trestman said Monday, Carter’s first official day as an Argo, that he won’t line up in the return meeting Sept. 8.

Carter was reportedly in total agreement when told he won’t be playing right away.
