Stop ignoring me, Markle’s dad pleads
LONDON • “Heartbroken” Thomas Markle has a message for his daughter, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex; her husband, Prince Harry; and Queen Elizabeth.
Appearing in a video interview live from California, Markle spoke with British hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid about the current state of his relationship with his estranged daughter. During the interview, Markle claimed he has had no contact with Meghan and received no reply to a recent letter and multiple text messages sent to the Duchess.
“Every day I try to text her, I just haven’t received any comment back,” Markle said, adding that he was disappointed in the lack of response from his daughter and was unsure why the rift was happening.
“I keep asking her to respond back to me, I haven’t got any response back.”
“So you’ve just been completely cut off? Ghosted?” asked Morgan, to which Markle replied: “Ghosted like you, yes.”
When asked if he had a message for his daughter and Prince Harry, Markle said: “I love you very much, you’re my daughter and we would like to hear from you.
“Whatever differences or problems we have, we should be able to work them out, we’re family. So, please reach out to me.”
Markle also confirmed that he has still has not met Prince Harry. “The unfortunate thing about my daughter and Harry is that they believe everything they read in the papers,” he said.
“There has to be a place for me, I’m her father — and I will be the grandfather to her children.”
The couple’s first child is due in spring and will be seventh in line to the throne — although the baby will not automatically assume the title of prince or princess. “I’m certainly hoping they produce a beautiful baby,” he added.
Talking about the Queen, Markle expressed his hope that Queen Elizabeth would help mend the growing rift.
“I would appreciate anything (the Queen) can do. I would think that she would want to resolve the family problems,” Markle said.
He also shared that he has apologized to the royal couple for his past behaviour.
On Twitter Monday morning, Morgan empathized with Markle, writing: “Thomas Markle received no payment for today’s interview,” as criticism of their talk poured in.
“It’s a very sad situation that needs to be resolved. (Prince Harry’s mother, Princess) Diana would have hated it,” Morgan wrote.
