Unicorn trees ready to sparkle for holiday season

- Chris Arnold

It’s almost time for Santa to slide down the chimney and leave presents for all the good girls and boys, but he’ll still need a tree to put them under. Some people have got tired of the traditional green and opted for something a bit more, shall we say, magical.

Unicorn trees are white, covered in sparkles, come in fun colours and feature the occasional horned horse.

Many users on Instagram have been decorating their trees to actually look like unicorns. To make your own, you need a white, or even pink, tree. They can usually be found at hardware stores around the holidays or online.

Once it is set up, instead of the traditional star on top, place a horn. Then add specifically placed coloured bulbs as eyes and a tinsel mouth. The possibilities are endless.

With the main design at the top, the rest of the tree is open for you to decorate in any way you like. Lights, ornaments, ribbons and everything else you have in the box of decorations stowed in the back of the basement is fair game.

Snowflakes, paper cutout ones or tiny plastic fake snow, add another level of holiday spirit. Silver and gold tinsel make the tree sparkle even when the lights are out. Speaking of sparkling, LED bulbs are available that can change colour and completely switch up the look of your masterpiece. Plus the reflection off the decorations will light up the entire room.

At last count, there are more than 1,150 posts under # Unicorntree on Instagram for you to explore if you need inspiration. Spikes in searches for the colourful foliage have increased each year since 2015, with a huge spike over 100 times the normal search numbers last December.
