Musk, Grimes announce arrival of their son ... X Æ A-12

- Marcus Parekh

Celebrities are always trying to outdo each other when it comes to naming their children, it would seem.

From A for Apple, Gwyneth Paltrow’s daughter, to Z for Zowie, David Bowie’s son, they have tortured the alphabet in search of that special “moniker” for their little one.

However, Elon Musk, 48, the Canadian/american/ South African billionaire rocket- launcher and his partner, Canadian singer Grimes, 32, have taken it to a whole new level.

They announced yesterday that they have decided to name their newborn son “X Æ A-12,” apparently inspired by an Elven language invented by JRR Tolkien, artificial intelligence and a CIA spy plane.

Grimes, alias Claire Boucher, took to social media to explain what each of the characters in her firstborn’s name mean. She said X refers to “the unknown variable” while Æ is her Elven spelling of “Ai (love &/or Artificial intelligence).” A-12 is a reference to the Lockheed aircraft, “precursor to SR-17 (our favourite aircraft). No weapons, no defences, just speed. Great in battle, but non- violent.” The A is short for “Archangel,” which Grimes said was her “favourite song.” It was also the CIA code name for the jet.

Neither Grimes nor Musk have clarified how his name should be pronounced.

It is believed that the birth took place in Los Angeles and California law states a child’s name must be made up from letters in the English alphabet. So, X Æ A-12 may not be legally registered.
