August 5, 1952 - Francis Pegahmagab­ow, Indigenous rights advocate and war veteran, died at Parry Island, Ont. Pegahmagab­ow is one of the most highly decorated soldiers in Canadian history. He was one of the most effective snipers in the First World War, and one of only 39 Canadian soldiers to receive the Military Medal and two bars for valour. Following his military service, Pegahmagab­ow was twice elected chief of

the Parry Island Ojibwa band.
