ALL-STAR GAME NOT A TARGET, POLICE SAY

-

Authorities said Sunday there is no reason to suspect terrorism or a threat directed at Major League Baseball’s All-star Game after three men were arrested Friday in an illegal-weapons probe at a hotel blocks from the stadium hosting the event.

“We are not aware of any threat to the All-star Game events, venues, players, or the community at this time,” the FBI Denver office said in a Twitter post.

Authorities have released sparse details about the incident at downtown Denver’s Maven Hotel near Coors Field, where celebrations are starting ahead of Tuesday’s All-star Game.

Richard Platt, 42, Gabriel Rodriguez, 48, and Ricardo Rodriguez, 44, were arrested and are being investigated on suspicion of possession of a weapon by a previous offender. Platt and Rodriguez are also under investigation over alleged possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.

A woman, Kanoelehua Serikawa, 43, was arrested and is being investigated on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. There was also a warrant for her arrest from another jurisdiction.

“The investigation and arrests were the result of a tip from the public, serving as an excellent example of the critical role the community plays in public safety,” the police said in a statement.

The police declined to provide additional information.

The Denver7 television station reported that a maid at the hotel contacted authorities after discovering more than a dozen weapons and a thousand rounds of ammunition inside one of the rooms.

The Philadelphia Phillies placed third baseman Alec Bohm, right-handers Aaron Nola and Connor Brogdon and left-hander Bailey Falter on the Covid-related injured list Sunday.

Left-handers Damon Jones and Christopher Sanchez, right-hander Mauricio Llovera and infielder Nick Maton were recalled from Triple-a Lehigh Valley.

Nola, 28, had been scheduled to start Sunday afternoon’s contest in Boston, the Phillies’ final game before the All-star break. Instead, right-handed reliever Brandon Kintzler (2-1, 7.54 ERA) will serve as the opener against the Red Sox for the rubber match of the threegame series.

Nola is 6-5 with a 4.53 ERA in 18 starts this season, his seventh with Philadelphia. He has struck out 126 batters in 101 innings.

Bohm, 24, is batting .243 with six homers and 41 RBIS in 85 games in his second season with the Phillies. He played seven innings in Philadelphia’s 11-2 win against the Red Sox on Saturday.

Brogdon, 26, is 5-2 with one save and a 4.19 ERA in 37 appearances out of the bullpen in his second season with Philadelphia.

Falter, 24, made his major league debut on April 25 and is 1-0 with a 4.58 ERA in eight relief appearances. Brogdon and Falter also appeared in Saturday’s game.

Orlando reached agreement with Jamahl Mosley on a four-year deal to coach the Magic, according to ESPN.

It’s the first head-coaching job for Mosley, 42, who spent the past seven seasons as an assistant to Dallas Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle. He’s also had stints as an assistant in Cleveland (201014) and Denver (2005-10).

The Magic had narrowed down their candidates to Mosley and Denver Nuggets assistant Wes Unseld Jr., who remains a leading candidate to take over the Washington Wizards, ESPN says.
