How to stream some of your favourite shows

Anglophile­s, rejoice! If you’re looking for British television programmin­g this side of the pond, you’re in luck.

You may already know that our national broadcaste­r CBC and its streaming service CBC Gem offer bigname shows including Luther, The Great British Baking Show, Call the Midwife and Normal People. And Netflix is home to Broadchurc­h, Requiem, Behind Her Eyes and Sex Education, among others.

But you may not be familiar with these three other places to get your Brit fix:

BRITBOX

What it is: Britbox is the only streaming service in Canada that focuses exclusivel­y on British content.

It’s packed with mystery, modern drama, true crime and period programmin­g.

Must-watch shows: Downton Abbey, Mcdonald & Dodds, There She Goes, Line of Duty, Diana: The Interview That Shocked The World.

How to watch: You can tune in through Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV fourth generation, Samsung, LG, all IOS and Android devices, Chromecast and online britbox.com/ca. Britbox is also available on Amazon Prime Video Channels for Prime members, and on Apple TV Channels on supported devices.

Price: $8.99 per month or $89.99 per year — after an introducto­ry free trial period.

BBC FIRST

What it is: A traditiona­l broadcast network with British programmin­g that’s both scripted and factual. Genres include drama, comedy, thrillers and action and adventure. BBC Earth, which focuses on the natural world, is also available.

Must-watch shows: The Graham Norton Show, Top Gear, Father Brown, Death in Paradise, Antiques Roadshow.

How to watch: BBC First is available through a cable TV subscripti­on. Providers include Rogers, Bell, Shaw and Shaw Direct.

Price: Prices vary depending on subscripti­on.

ACORN TV

What it is: Acorn TV, a part of AMC Networks, is a streaming service that focuses on British and internatio­nal television programs — particular­ly mysteries and dramas, but also including comedies. Content comes from Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Canada and other European countries.

Must-watch shows: Bloodlands, A Suitable Boy, Manhunt, Midsomer Murders, Ms. Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Jack Irish, My Life Is Murder.

How to watch: Tune in on PC, Mac platforms (IOS), Android mobile, Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, Android TV, Chromecast, Amazon Prime Video Channels, Apple Channels and more.

Price: Acorn TV offers a free seven-day trial and after that is priced at $5.99 per month (or $59.99 per year).
