Fedotov finally joins Flyers

-

Nine years after he was drafted by Philadelphia, goalie Ivan Fedotov has joined the Flyers.

Fedotov, whose NHL career was delayed after a forced Russian military service stint, had his contract in Russia’s KHL terminated Thursday by CSKA Moscow.

CSKA announced the abrupt termination with one year remaining on it, saying it keeps his KHL rights and “the club thanks Ivan Fedotov and wishes him good luck in further career.”

The Flyers drafted Fedotov in the seventh round in 2015. The 27-year-old Fedotov is under contract with the Flyers this season after his initial deal, signed in May 2022, was tolled. He attempted to come to North America in July 2022, but instead was taken by authorities to a remote military base in the Arctic Circle for a year of service.

Last summer, after completing that service, Fedotov signed a two-year contract with CSKA. He played for the team this past season, appearing in 49 games through March 8, when it was eliminated in the first round of the KHL’S Gagarin Cup playoffs.

Philadelphia 76ers coach Nick Nurse and guard Kelly Oubre Jr. have each been fined US$50,000 for their actions toward officials at the end of their 108-107 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday.

The league announced Friday that Nurse was fined for aggressively pursuing and verbally abusing game officials. Oubre’s fine was for verbally abusing and directing an obscene gesture toward game officials.

The game ended when Los Angeles’ Kawhi Leonard blocked an Oubre attempt at the rim. Nurse believed Oubre was fouled by Los Angeles’ Paul George while driving to the basket. Referee Kevin Scott acknowledged in a pool report after the game that George should have been called for a foul on the play.

Xabi Alonso will stay as coach of Bayer Leverkusen, ending speculation linking him with the soon-to-be vacant Liverpool and Bayern Munich jobs.

Leverkusen is on course for its first German title, 10 points clear in the Bundesliga with eight games remaining. That record has made Alonso one of the most sought-after coaches in world soccer.

The Cavaliers are keeping forward Marcus Morris Sr. around for the rest of this season.

Cleveland signed Morris on Friday for the last nine regular-season games and playoffs after his 10-day contract expired earlier this week. The Cavs initially added the 14-year veteran to the roster on March 18.

Morris has played in five games, averaging 7.8 points and 3.0 rebounds in 18.4 minutes. But his contributions go beyond the numbers as he has brought a spark and energy to the Cavs, who have struggled since the allstar break amid a slew of injuries.
