Please, infrequent hair washers, for the sake of everyone, rebuild your relationship with shampoo. Throw out your shower caps, let your hair down, and wash it.
Bombarded by blowout bars and dry shampoo, women are revolting against the traditional shampoo-and-condition-daily model and are washing their hair much less. While there’s nothing wrong with using dry products in between regular washes, they should not be seen as a substitute. The reliance on shampoo alternatives – which rarely get your hair squeaky clean – have put oily scalps in vogue. The I-ran-a-marathon-last-week-andhaven’t-washed-my-hair-since look is everywhere from the catwalk to the sidewalk, and it desperately needs to end.
Let’s stick to camping, long flights and unexpected water shut-offs as the only times where a hint of glistening grease is acceptable. Try as we might to fight it, our forced acceptance of this cultural craze poses an important question: how often should one be washing their hair?
The New York Times recently spoke with distressed hair experts, and found that some women are washing every several days; others, weekly. One stylist said, “The truth is, some of my guy clients have been coming in and asking me to tell their girlfriends, wives, lovers to wash their hair.”
Aside from looking like Leonardo DiCaprio on the set of The Revenant, unwashed hair stinks. Letting your mane go days without soapy suds causes your scalp to reek. Like every other part of our bodies, our heads are covered in skin. This skin needs to be washed. The combination of oil, dandruff and overall filth turns fruit-smelling locks into sweaty, smelly strands. It’s a pungent combination that no one should have to endure.
Now, women aren’t the only ones who’ve been neglecting their washing routines. Men are notoriously tardy hair washers. Regardless of how fashionable dirty hair is, it sends a message to the world that you don’t take cleanliness seriously. Would you only apply deodorant when you felt like it? Or wash your underwear after several wears?
So please, infrequent hair washers, for the sake of everyone, rebuild your relationship with shampoo. Throw out your shower caps, let your hair down, and wash it. Approach washing your hair as you do washing your face: do it daily.
