PARISHIONERS, POLICE COME TOGETHER OVER O’JAYS’ LOVE TRAIN
Churchgoers and uniformed police officers snaked through the aisles of a historic church in Halifax on Sunday, clapping to a rendition of Love Train by The O’Jays. Members of the 185-year-old Cornwallis Street Baptist Church invited police into the pews as part of a service marking the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Police Chief Jean-Michel Blais, pictured, joined other officers to croon in the choir, and addressed the congregation with a speech framed as a message to his 14-yearold son. Days ago, Blais faced tough questions about racial profiling following the release of police statistics that showed black men in Halifax were three times more likely than whites to be subject to street checks.
