DON’T SIMPLY BE A NEW BOSS, BE A GOOD BOSS
Your startup is humming along and you’re hiring more people every month, putting you in a power position. But like many entrepreneurs, you may never have had any management training. Inc.com suggests some ways to be a good boss. First, meet with staff, recognize achievements and get feedback about their jobs. Second, don’t stick with what you know when hiring. That’s “the first step to organizational imbalance,” creating gaps in the skill and personality mix. Third, trust people, not just numbers and facts. Numbers don’t lie, but neither do they provide insight. Go with someone’s hunch on occasion. Fourth, subordinates are not friends. Keep a professional distance to avoid creating favouritism. Don’t lunch with them unless there’s an occasion; chit-chat, but move on to work topics; don’t confide in anyone who reports to you. Five, admit your mistakes or be “poison to a productive team.”. Acknowledge what you don’t know, ask questions, and forgive staff their errors so they’ll forgive yours.
