Even among the stodgy (and dodgy?) Senior entrants, many pairs at the Canadian National Team Championsh­ips employed some version of a forcing club opening bid.

They tried to find a host of opponents eager to get in the auction to try to gum up the other side’s bidding machinery.

But that tactic often backfired by giving away informatio­n a skillful declarer could exploit.

South’s one club call was forcing as he was preparing to rebid to show 15-17 highcard points in a balanced hand.
