Golfer Thomas adds to winning CV

-

NORTON, MASS. • Justin Thomas added another big title to a season filled with big moments by outlasting Jordan Spieth and Marc Leishman on the back nine of the TPC Boston to win the Dell Technologies Championship.

Two shots behind at the turn, Thomas surged ahead with a short birdie and a 6-foot par save and closed with a 5-under 66 for a threeshot victory that was much tighter than the final margin. It was the fifth title of the season for Thomas, including his first major at the PGA Championship.

Mackenzie Hughes of Dundas, Ont., and Adam Hadwin of Abbotsford, B.C., were the low Canadians at 8 under and tied for 13th. Hughes shot up the leaderboard after a 67 while Hadwin, who started the day two shots back of the lead, struggled to a 73. Nick Taylor (72), also of Abbotsford, finished 2 over and Graham DeLaet (70) of Weyburn, Sask., was 7 over.

Spieth wasted a birdieeagle-birdie-birdie start to his round with too many mistakes on the back nine. He closed with a 67 and was runner-up for the second straight week in the FedEx Cup playoffs. Spieth still went to No. 1 in the FedEx Cup. Leishman shot 40 on the back nine and wound up four back after a 70.

Meanwhile, Stacy Lewis won for Houston. Lewis ended a long winless streak Sunday at the LPGA’s Cambia Portland Classic, with her $195,000 in winnings going to the relief efforts in her hometown area. Her two biggest sponsors also stepped up, with KPMG matching her donation and Marathon Oil kicking in $1 million. She closed with a 3-under 69 to hold off In Gee Chun by a stroke.

Canada’s Brooke Henderson tied for 15th at 10 under. Hamilton’s Alena Sharp was 6 under, while Maude-Aimee Leblanc of Sherbrooke, Que., was 2 over.
