Defending our ‘free’ society

- Marc Friedman, Thornhill, Ont.

Re: Nov. 11 articles in the National Post, including War’s true colours; A new look at old realities; and Peacekeeping promises The contrast in articles from Saturday’s Post was both revealing and disheartening. Passchendaele is but one historical example exemplifying Canada’s outstanding self-sacrifice defending freedom. Fast forward and Canada has a shameful contribution of 63 personnel deployed across the globe while Justin Trudeau proudly claims “Canada is back.” Meanwhile at home, freedom of expression and thought is being sapped away in yet another example, this one at Wilfrid Laurier, where graduate student Lindsay Shepherd is taken to task for the nerve to have a discourse on gender pronouns that brings Professor Jordan Peterson’s views into the debate. Bring out the safe zones! I worry for my children and grandchildren as Western society continues its slide down the social justice slope, which will reach a point where we will no longer have a free society, let alone the ability and courage to defend it.
