Marvel’s The Punisher set for Netflix debut

Like most weeks, this one is all about counting down the days until Friday — when Marvel’s The Punisher makes its way to Netflix. Starring the gritty Jon Bernthal, with Deborah Ann Woll and Ben Barnes, it’s the latest addition to the Netflix/ Marvel franchise — and the most violent, yet.

Since he made his bloodspatt­ered debut in the second season of Daredevil, Bernthal’s Frank Castle character has been long in the works for his own series. A presumed dead war veteran with vengeance to spare, he’s the antihero we truly need right now.

Also making waves this month is Dee Rees’s Mudbound, based on the Hillary Jordan novel, which follows two Second World War veterans who begin to grow a deep friendship despite their racial barriers in rural Mississipp­i. Starring Carey Mulligan, Garrett Hedlund and Mary J. Blige, this one’s got a ton of early Oscar buzz.
