Baldwin concerned for alleged predators

‘People have lost their jobs, their reputations’

Another day, another unfortunate comment from Alec Baldwin.

This week, the actor speculated on post-Weinstein Hollywood after taking issue with John Oliver’s moderation of a Wag the Dog anniversary screening last week, in which the Last Week Tonight host grilled Dustin Hoffman on his alleged history of sexual misconduct.

At the time, Baldwin tweeted, “Talk shows were once promotional pit stops for some blithe chit chat about movies, etc. Now the likes of @iamjohnoliver and @StephenAtHome have flipped that and they are beginning to resemble grand juries.”

He then doubled down during an appearance on Megyn Kelly Today, saying, “You certainly want to see everybody who’s guilty of something, who’ve done bad things, wrong things and hurt people, you want to see those people get punished. But I don’t want to see other people get pulled into that, who, there’s a lot of accusations and no proof yet.”

After receiving the usual round of criticism on social media, Baldwin “clarified” his thoughts in a fresh round of tweets on Sunday, writing, “I did not suggest that late night hosts ‘stick to’ blithe chitchat. I merely pointed out that the migration from then to now is striking. And that I believe @iamjohnoliver was rather heavy-handed in his approach to (Dustin Hoffman). ... People have lost their jobs, their reputations and the legacy of their good/great work. Some have deserved that. Some have not. And all without a single conviction in a courtroom. If Weinstein is not convicted in court, this movement may be in jeopardy of derailing.”

One can only imagine how much of Baldwin’s opinions we’ll be privy to now that the actor has been granted a talk show of his own at ABC. No word yet on when that will premiere, but in the meantime, Baldwin’s Twitter should suffice.
