National Post (National Edition)
POST WINS HONOURS FOR PRESENTATION
The National Post has won 16 awards at the Society for News Design’s 39th annual competition and photographer Tyler Anderson is a finalist for spot news photo of the year in a separate competition.
The Post was honoured for design and layout as well as graphics and illustration in pages throughout the paper in 2017.
The judges appeared particularly impressed with illustrations by staff artists Brice Hall, for his work on the exodus from Syria and his coverage of the federal Conservative leadership race, and, Mike Faille for his work on a retelling of the Battle of Vimy Ridge and conceptual illustrations for the Financial Post. Freelance contributor Chloe Cushman was also honoured for her depiction of Aung San Suu Kyi.
The design work of Ania Medrek, Becky Guthrie and Gigi Suhanic was noted for everything from imagining what the National Post would have looked like if it had existed the day after Vimy Ridge to breaking news on the Quebec mosque shooting to feature pages in Weekend Post.
“Often the challenge lies in finding ways to illustrate stories that may not have much to offer visually, but the presentation team finds ways to do it, every day,” said Ron Wadden, head of the National Post presentation team.
The Society for News Design is an international organization that recognizes excellence in news design.
Meanwhile, Tyler Anderson was one of three nominees for spot news photo of the year by the News Photographers Association of Canada. Anderson’s photo captured the rescue of a woman dangling from a crane in Toronto. The winner will be announced on April 28.
