Trump and the world

Re: Simmering summer, Conrad Black; July 14; At every turn, Trump ignores the obvious, Andrew Coyne; July 14

Donald Trump’s relationship to Vladimir Putin follows previous examples of world leaders who realized how wrong they had been to trust someone who turned out to be their enemy.

The two most infamous cases were in 1938 when British prime minister Neville Chamberlain declared after meeting Hitler, “peace for our time,” and Winston Churchill, who said “if Great Britain were defeated in war I hope we should find a Hitler to lead us back to our rightful position among the nations.”

Today Russia is a serious threat to world peace. Chamberlain and Churchill woke up to the nightmare of Hitler.

When will Donald Trump wake up and realize Putin is not his buddy? Reiner Jaakson, Oakville, Ont.

Conrad Black refers to the cyclonic President Trump being “magnificently” disdainful of all opinions except those of his followers in his own country.

Let us apply the adjective ‘magnificent’ to Mr. Trump. He is a proven magnificent liar, as recorded in detail by the The Washington Post. He is magnificent in reducing the White House administration to courtiers in a monarchical regime.

He is magnificent in his bombastic accusations of fake news whenever the press calls him up on his magnificent ability to turn a phrase on its head that is so obvious a child could decipher it.

Yes Mr. Black. Trump is magnificent, but in the most negative sense of the word. Marvin Sharpe, Victoria

From what I can gather from Andrew Coyne’s article, the most grievous offence of the Russians was hacking into Democratic Party and Clinton campaign servers to release this secret information to the public.

Among the revelations was the shocking truth that the DNC elite had actively worked to undermine Bernie Sanders’ campaign. A core component of democracy is openness, truth, and transparency.

If it was indeed the Russians behind this, they should be commended for strengthening American democracy through informing the citizenry of the machinations of their elites, in the storied tradition of Edward Snowden and Julian Assange. Dominik Wrona, Mississauga
