The scourge of anti-semitism
Re: Postal workers join antiisrael bandwagon, Robert Fulford, Aug. 4
During the years when I was publisher and Fulford was editor of Saturday Night Magazine, we did not always agree on issues, but this time Fulford is spot-on.
I still believe in freedom of expression, but we here in Canada willingly harbour three sets of villains on the above subject.
First, are all the provincial and federal governments that “kowtow” to their agencies, who, on one hand, constantly complain about working conditions and the requirement for increased financial security and more money, and on the other hand, like the postal workers, and the CUPW, espouse anti-israel and therefore anti-semitic rhetoric.
Second are our universities that profess to support democratic values, and free speech, but allow and encourage anti-zionists to speak to their students and professional staff, knowing full-well that, within the general student and professorial population, anti-zionism is a substitute for anti-semitism. Donors to universities should be aware of this terrible trend and stop financially supporting those errant schools of senior learning.
The third set are the Semites themselves, who instead of sending vast amounts of money to Israel’s academic infrastructure should first finance domestic programs that re-educate those poor souls who cannot differentiate between anti-zionism and anti-semitism.
The “fear and loathing of Israel” is no excuse for unequivocal and diabolical antiSemitism. Edgar Cowan, Toronto
