POWER RANKINGS

WEEK 13

- Dan Barnes

1. Calgary (1)

The CFL season is a serious test of depth and the Stampeders responded well in the Labour Day Classic when star WR Kamar Jorden was lost with a leg injury. QB Bo Levi Mitchell, who shook off a left knee injury to engineer the winning drive, spread the ball to six other receivers. They also got a 115-yard rushing game from rookie RB Don Jackson and the defence held tight when it counted most.

2. Saskatchewan (4)

The Riders are still reinventing the wheel on offence, but now it’s working. Starter Zach Collaros has steadied everyone’s nerves and former college QB Nick Marshall, now a DB, continues to get it done as a shortyardage pivot. These are not the same Riders who didn’t know what to do with Duron Carter until they knew they didn’t want anything to do with him.

3. Edmonton (3)

The Eskimos are sliding into the meat of the season and that should have the coaching staff on edge this week. There were major opportunities squandered on both sides of the ball in Calgary and penalties continue to hurt. The Eskimos lost two fumbles and a Mike Reilly pass was picked off after it went through a receiver’s hands. On defence, two potential interceptions turned into knock-downs.

4. Hamilton (5)

QB Jeremiah Masoli is getting some love from opponents and observers as a potential MOP rival for Reilly. Masoli cranked it up against Toronto, but needs to get a handle on his interception total. He threw an ill-advised prayer against the Argos and it was picked. He also tossed three TD passes and was the catalyst for an offence that fired on all cylinders. So there’s that.

5. Ottawa (2)

This is what happens when you lose at home to Montreal.

6. B.C. (7)

The Lions missed out on all the Labour Day jockeying, but they get a bye-week bump from the free-falling Bombers.

7. Winnipeg (6)

QB Matt Nichols will be feeling even more heat after completing just 53 per cent of his attempts in the Labour Day weekend loss. This is a team with plenty of talent on both sides of the ball, but it lacks confidence and a killer instinct.

8. Montreal (9)

The Als have escaped the rankings basement and are one win away, perhaps, from doing the same thing in the East Division standings. Mobile, confident rookie QB Antonio Pipkin continues to give opposing defences trouble and his performance allows Johnny Manziel plenty of time to come back from a concussion. The Als’ defence is also stiffening under crafty old co-ordinator Rich Stubler.

9. Toronto (8)

Rookie QB Mcleod Bethelthompson has hit a flat spot, completing just 48 per cent of his pass attempts in a loss to Hamilton. No receiver caught more than three passes and the offence had little juice left by the fourth quarter, which Hamilton won 18-0. DB Alden Darby Jr. continues to impress on defence, but they are well short of a solid, three-phase effort these days.
