Missing the Trump boat?
Re: A highly predictable president, Lawrence Solomon, Sept. 14; and Conrad Black
The arguments in Lawrence Solomon’s compellingly written article and Conrad Black’s admiring new book, Donald J. Trump: A President Like No Other, are strikingly similar.
In delivering on his promises the way he has, Donald Trump has no doubt broken the mould and shaken the Washington establishment to its core. There are also the worldwide ripple effects of his imperious actions to augment and make much about this new prince of disruption very commendable.
Concomitantly, however, is his emergence as a master of mendacity that increasingly troubles me. Add his notorious laxness on facts, his bewildering propensity for Uturns and his presidents’ men falling like dominoes and, sadly, the truth is no longer marching on as the famous chorus in the Battle Hymn of the Republic extols.
In a career of over 50 years, I’ve long learnt that truth and integrity are the ultimate ingredients in successful investing. It’s in Trump’s world of fake news and distorting, if not ignoring, the truth that I feel Messrs. Solomon and Black could be missing the boat. Instead, could these be the glaring deficiencies that bring him down and also portend the failure of what could otherwise have been a refreshingly positive presidency?
