Gomez reportedly suffers breakdown
Actress reportedly in psychiatric care
Almost exactly a year ago, Selena Gomez revealed she had undergone a kidney transplant due to lupus. In the past, the actress/singer has spoken about growing up with the illness, having undergone chemotherapy in 2015 to battle it, and checked into a psychiatric facility the following year after experiencing depression and anxiety as a result. After years of rumours about a substance abuse problem, Gomez also did a brief stint at a rehab clinic — though her publicity team blamed it on exhaustion.
Which brings us to Wednesday, when TMZ reported Gomez was hospitalized twice in the past two weeks, after having experienced an “emotional breakdown.”
The 26-year-old was reportedly “despondent and emotional” after learning she had an “alarmingly” low white blood cell count, and was then taken to CedarsSinai Medical Center in Los Angeles by a family member.
Gomez went home days later, but was readmitted last week when the low cell count persisted. She requested to go home but when doctors insisted she stay, Gomez reportedly launched into a “meltdown” and “freaked out,” ripping IVS out of her arm. She is currently being treated at a psychiatric facility on the east coast, according to TMZ.
In addition to her health, Gomez has been experiencing a rather tumultuous year. In August, her onetime best friend and former Disney co-star Demi Lovato was hospitalized for an alleged heroin overdose. And in late September, Gomez raised eyebrows for blasting her interview in Elle’s October issue, claiming it had misrepresented her despite being relatively innocuous. She then did an Instagram Live session, in which she appeared sporadically incoherent, and revealed she has been suffering from depression for five years.
During the stream, she said she would be taking yet another “step back” from social media, adding, “Every time I try to do something right, every time I try to do something good, I felt like people were picking me apart.”
She may have been referring to being a target of negative comments when former flame Justin Bieber got engaged to model Hailey Baldwin very soon after splitting from her. Meanwhile, her other recent ex, The Weeknd, confirmed his back-on relationship with model Bella Hadid earlier this week on Instagram.
