ON THIS DAY
September 23, 1981 – Teswahno, known as Chief Dan George, died in North Vancouver. The Tsleil-Waututh First Nation chief (1951–63) worked as a longshoreman, logger and musician.
George was in his 60s when his acting career took off. George insisted on playing “good” figures, as Indigenous people were often represented as “bad.” He appeared in numerous feature films and published two books of prose-poetry.
