COUPLE ALLEGEDLY SCAMMED CHURCH BY FAKING KIDS' CANCER

Durham Regional Police allege a husband and wife, who are guardians of two children, pretended the kids had serious diseases including cancer in order to defraud a church of $650,000. The force says two church members reported the couple. Police say the family was given cash, rent money, groceries, a motor vehicle and other financial support over two years. An Oshawa, Ont. man, 60, and woman, 50, are charged with three counts of fraud over $5,000, three counts of false pretences over $5,000, and two counts of possession of proceeds of crime over $5,000. The man has also been charged with assault. The suspects allegedly dressed one child in a hospital gown, covered the child’s head in bandages and attached a fake intravenou­s connection.
