MAYOR THREATENED OVER PLAN TO CULL DEER IN PARK
Police south of Montreal say they are investigating after a mayor was allegedly threatened over her plan to cull deer living in a city park. Longueuil police say they've received at least one credible threat against Mayor Sylvie Parent. City officials recently decided to control the white-tailed deer population living in a municipal green space by killing half of them and donating their meat to a food bank.
Longueuil says the roughly 30 deer living in Michel-Chartrand Park are threatening the area's biodiversity and increasing the risk of accidents. But the plan has been met with opposition, including a petition that had over 23,000 signatures as of Thursday. Melanie Mercille of the Longueuil police could not confirm the nature of the threats against Parent.
