February 23, 1970 – The Juno Awards, then known as the RPM Gold Leaf Awards, were presented for the first time. The awards began as an annual series of reader polls first conducted in 1964 by the music industry magazine RPM. RPM readers continued to select the winners until 1975 when the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences was formed strictly for the purpose of overseeing the annual ceremony.
