It’s a cold winter out there, so why not get out and get involved in helping those who need help getting around this season? As always, Volunteer Ottawa (a United Way agency) features many listings from a variety of Ottawa organizati­ons in need of help. Visit volunteero­ttawa.ca or call 613-736-5270 today. Helping indoors and out: The Children’s Aid Society of Ottawa is a non-profit community organizati­on that is legally mandated to protect children and youth from abuse and neglect. At the moment, they are recruiting volunteer drivers to transport children and youth from activities and programs, as well as tutors/ mentors to provide a stable and adult role model while assisting one on one with schoolwork. Also, volunteers are needed to assist teachers in the preschool Unit. Volunteers must be over 18 years old and provide a police check for the vulnerable sector. Enjoy working with children?: The Nepean, Rideau, Osgoode Community Resource Centre is looking for after-school support staff (pick your hours) to help program co-ordinators with organizing after-school activities. Enjoy working with seniors?: The Eastern Ontario Resource Centre strives to develop and deliver social services that reflect identified needs in the community. They are looking for friendly volunteers to visit seniors in the home for about one hour per week, Monday to Friday; one of these visitors must be able to speak Mandarin to visit a couple in Orléans. Volunteers greatly improve their quality of life and are needed to help in a variety of ways. Assist with feeding, playing bingo and pastoral care services. Do you play music? Share your talents. well: Garry J. Armstrong is a 180-bed home providing high quality, client-focused care in a home-like environmen­t that is comfortabl­e, safe and secure in central Ottawa. Volunteers contribute substantia­lly to the quality of residents’ life. In return, volunteers’ lives are enriched. Volunteers are needed to assist residents at mealtimes as well as porter residents to and from their hair appointmen­ts. No driving is required, as the hairdressi­ng service is located in-house. myths: The Alzheimer Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County needs individual­s with teaching experience to make presentati­ons to grades 5 and 10 classes during April 2013 at various schools throughout Ottawa. The goal of the education program is to provide students with an awareness of the impact of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, help dispel myths and prevent stigma, encourage healthy lifestyles associated with longterm brain health and promote intergener­ational awareness. Volunteer educators will use a prepared curriculum to deliver interactiv­e and informativ­e presentati­ons. Training will be provided. A ‘vulnerable sector’ police record check is required.
