Wakefield’s Mikaela Tommy was the best of three capital-region athletes in the women’s giant slalom of the world junior alpine ski championsh­ips at Mont Ste-Anne, Que., on Friday. Tommy finished 30th with a combined time of two minutes, 26.16 seconds for her two runs. Valérie Grenier of St-Isidore was 34th in 2:27.28, and Ottawa’s Kelly Moore was 47th in 2:32.27. Austria’s LisaMaria Zeller was the winner in 2:22.23, just ahead of Norway’s Ragnhild Mowinckel (2:22.37).

Vincent de Haître of Cumberland was 14th with a time of 36.94 seconds on Friday in the first men’s 500-metre race of the world junior long-track speed skating championsh­ips at Collalbo,

Italy. The 18-year-old de Haître was also 24th in the 3,000 metres in four minutes, 5.26 seconds, and that helped him into ninth place overall at the midpoint of the championsh­ips. On Saturday he is to skate in a second 500-metre race as well as the 1,500 metres. This is his first appearance in the world junior championsh­ips.

Retired freestyle skier Jean-Luc Brassard will serve as Canada’s assistant chef de mission for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. The Quebec native won a gold medal at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehamme­r, Norway.

Yankees closer Mariano Rivera has thrown batting practice for the first time since knee surgery last

year. The 43-year old Rivera expects to be ready when the Yankees open the regular season April 1 against the Boston Red Sox.
