You’re invited to fringe fest

Reinvent yourself with bold, flirty bangs,

- MARTA GOLD

Q: What are dip-dyed bangs and what’s the best way to wear them?

Ombre colour — that variously blended hair colour that looks like the wearer dipped the ends in dye — is spreading, not only in popularity, but to the rest of hair, especially to bangs.

Called dip-dyed bangs, the newest hair trend sees a thick fringe of bangs done in two or more colours, giving the effect of the ends having been dipped in dye, as the name suggests.

“We’ve seen it where it’s subtle or we’ve seen it where it’s a really blunt line, literally dip-dyed, where people do black on blond or a bold colour,” says Erin Mooney, who runs a hair trends website called Mane Dish in Edmonton. “It’s just an evolution of the ombre trend, going into something a little more drastic.”

Edmonton hairstylist Andrea Nguyen has been experimenting with the dip-dye trend in subtle and more extreme colours. She’s the owner of Ivory Noir Salon, which specializes in colour correction. “It’s definitely something that’s hot for 2013,” Nguyen says. “I think we’re one of the first salons to showcase it.”

Dip-dye fans can do it just on bangs, or mix it with overall ombre colour on their hair, she says.

While “dip-dyed” is often used to describe bangs that have had the ends dipped in colour, technically, it refers to a more involved process in which bangs are done in three subtle colours to create a “shine band” across the bangs, she says. “It’s supposed to give you more of a bevelled look.”

Clients are often drawn to photos of particular hair colours because of the light reflection and shadows. “With this trend it’s really cool because I’m able to really create that dimensional look in their fringe by using the three different colours.”

The process is a fairly involved one — some of the looks shown here took up to two hours to create — which means it’s not for everyone. “But for the right person who’s willing to sit and get something absolutely different, it’s so worth it,” she adds.

“It just adds so much drama and dimension. It’s fun — I love it.”
