Have a garlicky weekend

- LAURA ROBIN

Everything’s coming up garlic this weekend:

Silver Spring Farm is holding its 17th annual garlic sale to benefit those with developmental difficulties. More than 120 volunteers have harvested more than 40,000 garlic bulbs at the farm in Bells Corners. Stop by the farm at the corner of Robertson Road (formerly Richmond Road at that point) and Baseline any day between 9:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. to buy everything from small bulbs selling for three for $2 to braids of nine large bulbs for $40. You can call “the garlic hotline” at 613569-8993 ext. 409 before you go to make sure they haven’t sold out.

The 14th annual Carp Farmers Market Garlic

Festival is on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free to this, the largest garlic festival in Canada. There will be 80 agricultural vendors, including 28 selling local garlic. Foodie tip: Chef Jonathan Korecki of Sidedoor will be there both days, selling some of his famous, freshmade tacos with fillings that will include roasted and fried garlic. Look for him next to the Acorn Creek stand.

The Perth Garlic Festival is also on this weekend: Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $5, with funds going to the local Lions club. Highlights of the Perth festival include 70 vendors as well as presentations and tastings. Foodie tip: Chef Judy Dempsey, who used to run Perth’s acclaimed Hungry Planet restaurant, will be cooking with garlic and offering samples at the event, both days between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
