Huskies’ own goal seals win for Gatineau at the ‘Bob’

With the best road record in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, the Gatineau Olympiques would like to do something about their record at the ‘Bob’ in the coming weeks.

At 8-4 it’s not bad. It’s just not dominant like the only three teams higher in the standings.

Towards that end, the Olympiques began a stretch of seven of their next 11 at the Robert Guertin by skating to a fast-paced 3-1 win over the RouynNoranda Huskies in front of a Friday night crowd of 2,736.

And the Olympiques are right back at it, again at home, Saturday night when the lowly Saint John Sea Dogs visit at 7 p.m.

The teams skated through an entertaining opening period without a goal before Morrisburg native Marc Beckstead scored his first goal as an Olympique 57 seconds into the second on a power play.

Beckstead, a former Cumberland Grad, was picked up from the Kingston Frontenacs at the end of training camp.

That lead lasted more than 16 minutes until Rouyn-Noranda’s JeanSebastien Dea caught Gatineau napping at the start of a man advantage and beat Anthony Brodeur to tie things after two.

The Olympiques needed lady luck for the game-winner 24 seconds into the third when a Huskies defenceman slam-dunked the puck into his own net on a clearing attempt. Gatineau captain Taylor Burke got credit for it.

Martin Reway scored into the empty net with 8.2 seconds remaining.

The Olympiques played without Ottawa Senators draft pick Vincent Dunn for the fourth consecutive game. Dunn injured an ankle down east and while it was originally thought to be a bone fracture, X-rays were negative. The veteran tried it in the pre-game skate and the ankle didn’t last 10 minutes. He is listed as day-to-day.

67’S LOSE IN OT

At Oshawa, the Ottawa 67’s losing streak reached five games after a tough 3-2 overtime loss to the East Division-leading Oshawa Generals.

Philadelphia Flyers No. 1 pick Scott Laughton and Bradley Latour scored first-period goals for the Generals.

Oshawa dominated the 67’s in the opening period, outshooting the visitors 18-6 only to have the 67’s roar back in the second and tie it on goals by Nevin Guy and Joseph Blandisi.

Oshawa won it 3:50 into the extra period on a goal by Michael Dal Colle. Philippe Trudeau was the star of the game with 43 saves for the 67’s.

The 67’s are back in action Sunday afternoon in Kingston.
