Sold on Summerhill

- Sheila Brady

Private planning consultant Ted Fobert has had his pick of prime condos through the years.

As the go-to guy for many of Ottawa’s developers when it comes to shepherding complex projects through the approval process at city hall, the founding partner of FoTenn Consultants has had an intimate connection to a wide selection of developments. Yet it was Summerhill that finally snagged him, getting him to put his money down recently on a two-storey penthouse.

“I really like the location. That is probably the primary interest for me — the location. It is close to Little Italy and Dow’s Lake, and it is walking distance into the Glebe,” says the 60-year-old, who is looking at slowing down in a couple of years and changing his lifestyle. His wife, Janice Moe, is retired from the microbiology lab at the Queensway-Carleton Hospital. Their only daughter lives in Vancouver.

“(Minto@lansdowne) obviously interested me, but what I like is the two-storey penthouse. It is unique and has a very large terrace that faces west. I think we should have a view of Dow’s Lake.”

The couple recently built a country home near Buckingham, Que., and spend time at a cottage in Maine. They will be trading their threebedroom Alta Vista home for a 1,400-square-foot penthouse that will set them back about $800,000.

“We are baby boomers looking to change our lifestyle. We weren’t spending a lot of time at our home in Alta Vista.”

The recreational cyclist likes the intimacy of a 39-unit condo building and is also looking forward to being close to all of the activity that will be generated around Preston Street when the condo towers planned for the area start going up.

“There is going to be a lot of excitement, and we will be nearby.”
