GAME DAY PREVIEW: SENATORS VERSUS FLYERS

-

The Series So Far

The Philadelphia Flyers make their only visit of the season to the Canadian Tire Centre on Sunday after winning the first meeting 2-1 in a shootout on Jan. 6. The Senators, who have defeated Philly twice in seven games over the past three seasons, ran into a hot goalie in Game 1 this year as Steve Mason made 42 saves. Wayne Simmonds was the other story for the Flyers as he used his 6-foot-2 frame in battles, scored his team’s goal in regulation and got the deciding shootout goal.

Players to watch Jakub Voracek, Flyers:

It wasn’t so long ago that the Czech was leading the NHL scoring derby, but he has cooled, with just three points in his past eight games and one goal in his past 11. Still, he has already established a personal best for points (67) and, with 20 goals through 69 games, seemed likely to surpass the singleseason-high of 23 he had last season.

Mark Streit, Flyers: He’s not very big (5-foot-11) and he’s not getting any younger (37), but Streit, the 262nd pick back in the 2004 draft, doesn’t appear to be slowing. The Swiss blueliner, who had a 62-point season with Montreal in 2007-08, came into the weekend leading Philadelphia in average ice time per game (22:16) and had 43 points, which put him among the top 11-scoring defencemen in the NHL.

Kyle Turris, Senators: Much had been made about how Turris would handle the rigours of being a No. 1 centre this season with Jason Spezza gone, and how his production might suffer. It’s debatable if he is still considered the Sens’ No. 1 centre, but coming into the week his production was almost exactly on pace with last season: In 2013-14, he had 58 points in 82 games (.707 points a game) and in 2014-15 he had 45 in 64 (.703).
