Ottawa Writers Festival springs into action soon

Pre-fest appearances begin with Ted Barris on March 23

- PETER ROBB

Spring must be right around the corner because the lineup for the Ottawa Writers Festival is being unveiled.

In addition to pre-festival appearances by writers such as Jane Urquhart, the main festival, which begins April 22, will showcase such literary figures as the thinker, writer and 2008 Pulitzer Prizewinner for fiction, Junot Díaz; Ottawa native Sean Michaels who won the Giller Prize for his book Us Conductors; Governor General’s Award-winner Raziel Reid, whose book for young adults When Everything Feels Like The Movies sparked a minor flurry of controversy over its subject, which involves teenage homosexuality; the brilliant Guy Vanderhaeghe, who has a new collection of stories called Daddy Lenin and Other Stories; and musician David Usher, who is exploring what it means to be an artist in his book called Let The Elephants Run.

But for regulars at the writers festival, the biggest news might just be a new location for most events. In the past, most panels have been in Knox Church at Lisgar and Elgin streets, but that venue was a bit cramped.

This year, the event moves to Christ Church Cathedral on Sparks Street near Bay Street.

For the festival’s artistic director the move is a relief. “It’s clean, climate controlled and fully wheelchair accessible. There’s more room to breathe and more room to continue the conversation. We’re close to public transit, bike lanes and parking,” Sean Wilson wrote in an email to patrons.

Wilson says this festival has a “decidedly musical spin, with ... a special focus on the brain and learning.”

There are political panels, poetry gatherings and lots of prose.
