Woman shot in Bells Corners house

Victim, 24, in critical condition

- ALISON MAH AND KIRSTIN E. ENDEMANN

The thing about this neighbourhood is that it looks cute and cuddly, but it’s rougher than you think.

A 24-year-old woman was in critical condition Sunday night after suffering multiple gunshot wounds inside a Bells Corners home early Easter morning.

Police were guarding the home and had interviewed several eyewitnesses.

“We don’t know what the motive is yet,” said acting Staff Sgt. Darren Vinet of the major crime unit. “We do not have any suspects.”

Neighbours said they heard several gunshots at about 5 a.m. at 11D Sonnet Cres., a four-unit building in a residential neighbourhood near Old Richmond Road and Moodie Drive.

The only victim was taken to hospital and underwent surgery.

Two women in their 20s lived at that address, said neighbours.

The residential neighbourhood, not known for violent activity, is made up of a web of privately owned townhomes, rowhouses and small, four-unit buildings.

Several neighbours said they also heard a single loud bang three hours before they heard gunshots at about 5 a.m., coming from the direction of the building.

Kel Legault said he heard “a shot” as he was going to bed at 2:30 a.m.

“The thing about this neighbourhood is that it looks cute and cuddly, but it’s rougher than you think,” said Legault.

Jeff Downes, who has been living in the neighbourhood for six years, said he’s never seen violence like this.

“It’s a pretty good neighbourhood. Never had any issues like this ever.

“We have very little police presence here, everyone knows each other here.”

Downes said the women at 11D were “pretty new to the neighbourhood” and moved in last summer.

Members of the police major crime division were interviewing witnesses Sunday and did not have anyone in custody.

“I’ve been a police officer in the west end, I started my career here, and this is not a bad neighbourhood,” said Insp. Carl Cartright.

“This is your average, typical middle-class neighbourhood in Bells Corners.

“It’s unfortunate, especially on a day like today, a special holiday, that you have such a tragedy. We take this very seriously, another shooting in our city, so we’ve deployed as many resources as we can.”
