Q How did you get into your sport?

A I got into my sport when I was about seven. I’m the youngest of four kids, and my parents put us into all sorts of different activities and my siblings did gymnastics, and they always really liked trampoline. So when they pulled out of gymnastics, they found an ad in the paper for a trampoline gym and my mom couldn’t find a babysitter for me and my sister so we just tagged along.

How did life change after winning gold in London?

A After winning gold in London I had a really incredible opportunity to get involved with organizations like Right to Play and Jumpstart and Active at School, but the base of my life really stayed the same. I went to school, I kept studying and I kept on training. My family and friends, they all treated me the same, so the base of it didn’t really change but I got some pretty cool opportunities.

Q Your grandfather had an opportunity to compete in the Olympics, but they were cancelled that year. Did his story inspire you at all?

A My grandfather qualified for the Olympics in gymnastics in 1940 ... I think having him go through that and experience that and qualifying and having the opportunity even to compete with the Maple Leaf on his uniform, when I was a little kid and said I wanted to be an Olympian he actually took that seriously and really motivated me and encouraged me and made me see that it was a real possibility.

Q What are your goals for Rio?

A I think the obvious one is to try to stand on top of the podium again and earn a medal for Canada, but personally I have a routine in mind that I want to do and it would really be pushing the edge of what women are doing in the sport, so working towards that. But I think going in I just want to know I’ve done everything I can to be the best athlete I can be at that moment and just going and loving my sport.
