Swedes upset U.S. in soccer

-

Sweden pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Olympic soccer history, beating the four-time champion U.S. women’s team 4-3 on penalty shots after a 1-1 draw in Brasilia. The U.S. women had never failed to advance to the semifinals in a major tournament. Afterwards, U.S. keeper Hope Solo — who insisted on changing her gloves before the final penalty kick — called the Swedes “a bunch of cowards” for their style of play. Said Swedish coach Pai Sundhage, who guided the U.S. women to gold in 2008 and 2012: “It is OK to be a coward if you win.”
