In just over 35 years, Alimentati­on Couche-Tard has grown from a single corner store based in Laval, Que., to becoming the biggest convenienc­e store company in Canada and the U.S. with more than 10,000 locations after Monday’s deal with CST Brands. Here’s a look at the company’s top five acquisitio­ns by value: Aug. 22, 2016: CST Brands Inc. for US$4.4 billion, including debt. Alimentati­on Couche-Tard agrees to then sell the majority of CST Brands’ Canadian assets, including at least 45 per cent of its retail locations, to Parkland Fuel Corp. for about C$965 million. April 20, 2012: Makes first foray into Europe with the purchase of Scandinavi­a’s Statoil Fuel & Retail and its 2,300 locations for US$2.8 billion.

March 8, 2016: Grows presence in Ontario and Quebec with C$1.7 billion deal to buy 279 Esso retail stations from Imperial Oil. Transactio­n is expected to close shortly.

Dec. 18, 2014: Adds more than 1,500 locations with acquisitio­n of The Pantry for US$1.7 billion, including US$840 million in debt and capital leases.

Oct. 7, 2003: Dramatical­ly expands position in the U.S. with US$804-million acquisitio­n of The Circle K Corp. (“Circle K”) from Conoco-Phillips, including US$7.9 million of debt for 1,663 stores.
