Suspended officer faces impaired charge

Arrested after traffic stop early Sunday morning

-

An Ottawa police officer already under suspension has been charged with impaired driving.

Police said Const. Christian Nungisa, 33, is charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and operating a motor vehicle while having a blood-alcohol reading above .08. Police said Nungisa was arrested after a traffic stop at about 5:30 a.m. Sunday.

In May 2016, Nungisa and another officer were suspended by the force after Nungisa reported to Kingston police that his personal vehicle and firearm had been stolen the morning after a night out in that city. Nungisa was in Kingston on an annual training exercise.

Nungisa later found his vehicle and his firearm — neither had been stolen — and Kingston police later spotted the vehicle — still flagged as stolen in their system — with Nungisa behind the wheel.

Ottawa police alleged that when Nungisa returned to Ottawa he gave his firearm to a friend to store rather than return it to his locker. Police believed fellow officer Const. Ahmad Hafizi, 39, was with Nungisa in Kingston and complicit in the events.

Both officers were charged with unsafe storage of a firearm, and Hafizi was additionally charged with transferring a firearm without authority and obstructing a peace officer.

Both officers remain suspended from duty and under investigation by the force’s professional standards section.
