Senators GM continues to look for help, but prices still too high

Pierre Dorion has lots of lines in the water as the Senators make a quick stop in the Sunshine State with the NHL trade deadline set for Wednesday at 3 p.m. He will find out soon enough if anybody wants to fish or cut bait.

The Senators GM has been trying to make a deal to get the club some forward depth, but it’s been all talk and no action for Dorion because the asking prices remain too high, with several opponents asking for the likes of high-end prospects Thomas Chabot and Colin White in return.

After spending Saturday working the phones, Dorion went back at it Sunday before the Senators faced the Florida Panthers at the BB&T Center. The club is trying to make a deal — big or small — to ensure the Senators get back to the post-season.

One possibility was taken off the table Sunday when Martin Hanzal was dealt from the Arizona Coyotes to the Minnesota Wild. The Senators had held serious discussion about Hanzal and may have tabled an offer, but didn’t meet the asking price Minnesota paid.

The Senators can use help, but they have limited assets to offer with only four picks in this spring ’s NHL entry draft, so they need to be careful. Still, Dorion wants to add depth to make sure this team gets to the playoffs, so he’s a motivated shopper.

As reported by Postmedia, the Senators have scoured the rental market to see what they can get before the deadline. The Dallas Stars have been contacted about Patrick Sharp and Jiri Hudler while it’s believed the Detroit Red Wings’ Thomas Vanek and Winnipeg Jets’ Drew Stafford are also on Dorion’s radar.
