Island Park home gets a modern makeover
Classic Island Park home gets a modern makeover, S. Evelyn Cimes writes
Lined with luxury homes and embassies, Island Park Drive is one of the more prestigious and beautiful streets in Ottawa. When the Pham family inherited their home, they knew an immaculate renovation was in order.
The Phams realized their home was in need of a lot of work. They would need an addition to fit their growing family, but they also felt that the house should fit in with the other traditional homes in the area. After selecting Amsted Design Build to undertake the large-scale project, they were ready to begin. The team at Amsted matched the Phams with an architectural designer who could fulfil their vision and find solutions for all of their needs.
An outdated existing addition was torn down and replaced with a two-storey addition.
The space they gained by doing that allowed for a complete interior redesign. On the main floor, an open concept kitchen, breakfast area and family room fill the new space, and on the second floor, the area was transformed into a new master bedroom, with ensuite and walk-in closet, that provides a private oasis for the parents.
The home’s original layout was updated as well. On the main level, the existing space was converted into an expanded formal dining room and living room. It also features a combination foyer and mud room between the front and garage entrances. The original second floor is now home to a dedicated laundry room, two updated bathrooms and three large bedrooms that provide their children with a space of their own.
“The design component was able to find solutions, not excuses, whatever the constraints, to make the look and feel we desired,” said homeowner Co Pham. “To highlight the Amsted way of doing business, we had design touch-points at crucial construction milestones. This permitted a logical and seamless understanding from bricks and beams to mouldings and paints.”
A new, continuous small apron roof integrates the existing red brick with the new cement board shingle cladding. The original charm of the home, as well as the architectural details common to the neighbourhood, were maintained. In the end, this lovely topto-bottom renovation blends in seamlessly with the other homes on Island Park Drive.
Not a single detail was overlooked during this impressive renovation.
In the end, the result is a timeless, comfortable family home that will be enjoyed for many generations.
