Finding the right best-built fence for your home

- JAMES CARELESS

“Good fences make good neighbours” is a truism that is cited by societies and cultures around the world. But when it comes to finding someone reputable who can build a good fence for your home, where can you go for help?

One trusted source is the Better Business Bureau website (www.bbb. org), where the performance and reliability of contractors is independently compiled. Search for “fence contractors in Ottawa,” and you’ll find the BBB A+ rated company Fence-All. In addition to their BBB A+ rating, Fence-All has won over 20 consecutive Ottawa Consumer Choice Awards (1997-2017). This is a fencing company with a history of satisfying their customers.

In business in Ottawa for the last 41 years, Fence-All locally manufactures and installs a full portfolio of fences, gates, decks and railings. Their Eastern Ontario clientele includes residential, business and government customers, including many of our capital city’s foreign embassies.

“We have even built fences at the Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport and the OttawaCarleton Detention Centre,” said Walter Montpetit, owner of FenceAll.

A BBB A+ rating and over 20 consecutive Ottawa Consumer Choice Awards is just the beginning of the Fence-All story. The reason? FenceAll doesn’t just offer quality, wellinstalled products that stand the test of time; they also offer what their customers want, at prices that make sense.

“It all starts with the fencing selection process,” said Montpetit. “Just as when you buy a car or a new home, you won’t be happy with what you eventually purchase if you didn’t decide what you wanted in the first place.”

This is where Fence-All’s expert sales consultants can help. They are here to walk consumers through the many options available for modern fencing and gates; from the leastexpensive chain link, through wood (pressure-treated or cedar), aluminum/iron and premium vinyl PVC materials.

“When you buy a fence, price certainly matters – but what matters more is what you want the fence to do for you,” Montpetit said. “For instance, if you just want a backyard fence to keep your dog in, and you don’t plan to spend time outside, then an economical chain link fence is just fine for the job.”

In those instances where the consumer wants a fence to define their property line with elegance and class, aluminum/iron can be a good choice. “Our see-through aluminum fences are treated with Fence-All’s Durable Powder Coating for longlasting colour and wear,” said Montpetit. “Our iron fences are coated with the same material, but they offer a longer maintenance-free lifespan because iron is tougher than aluminum.”

For backyard livers who want the ultimate in durability, privacy and good looks, Walter Montpetit recommends vinyl/PVC fences. “These are tongue-in-groove solid fences that no one can see through,” he said. “Vinyl/PVC fences look great and last a long, long time because they don’t age and decay the way wood does. Add the fact that our five-inchsquare vinyl/PVC fence posts are set into the ground using three-footdeep concrete footings, and these fences will literally stay straight for decades – while keeping their good looks.”

In recommending vinyl/PVC fencing, Montpetit isn’t saying that it is the right product for everyone. “Although a Mercedes-Benz is an excellent car, not everyone needs to spend that kind of money to get the quality of reliable transportation that they want,” he explained. “The same is true with fences. The smart move is to buy the quality and durability of fencing that meets your needs, at a price that works for you.”

This is where Fence-All’s 41 years of customer-focused service to Eastern Ontario is making a proven difference to consumers. “We have earned a BBB A+ rating and many awards because Fence-All’s people are industry veterans who listen to and meet our customers’ requirements,” said Montpetit.

Whatever fencing company you do select, stay away from fly-by-night fencing companies whose prices seem too good to be true – because they are. “The money you invest by choosing a reputable contractor – whether it is Fence-All or someone else – will result in a fence that will keep you happy in the long-term,” Montpetit said. “So be sure to do your homework, and to choose wisely.”
