“I was a cartographer with the federal government. I retired in 1997, so I’m pushing 20 years now.

“I enjoy playing golf, three times a week. I get out and get exercise. I never played golf before I retired. I started after I retired. I didn’t curl, either; I curl now, three times a week, at the Navy Curling Club.

“So I’ve enjoyed retirement. My wife retired six years after I did, so I’ve had two retirements, one with her and one without her. They’re different. We also kayak with friends, probably twice a week. We keep the weekends free, when we tend to go for drives; we might drive down to Watertown for lunch, just for something to do. We’ll drive anywhere in the Lanark area; go kayaking up the Clyde River. Tomorrow we’re going up towards Robertson Lake, which is up towards Ompah, and we’re going to launch there and go for a day ride. So this is our summer.”

It sounds like the pension worked out all right.

“It’s not bad. You just have to spread it out into the good stuff. Owning your own house is really a great thing when you retire. That’s the one ambition you have when you buy a house, to own it.

“So, anyway, I’m here at Copperdale Golf Course. It’s the old Edgewood Golf Course; a hill and gully known as a cow pasture at one time. A blue-collar golf course. It’s improving every year under new ownership. But right now they’re only charging you a dollar a hole to play. I can usually play until the end of October. The problem then is that I have my first bonspiel on the 26th of September. So curling is starting in the next couple of weeks. But there are days I’ll skip curling if the weather is like this. Or I’ll get in and get out pretty quickly. People hate curling when it’s nice outside.”
