False dichotomy in altruism debate
Re: With faith comes altruism, poll finds, May 20
To pit personal fulfilment against altruism is a false dichotomy, as modern biologists agree that the root of altruism is selfishness. According to William Hamilton, apparent acts of altruism — foregoing reproduction to help others, say — are actually selfserving, because from an evolutionary perspective, they benefit the altruist’s genes.
As well, seeking personal fulfilment is a step to making oneself a better, happier person, which benefits the person’s immediate social habitat. Jim Hutchison, Burnstown, Ont.
