Compared to Trump Trudeau looks good
Re: The Trudeau Delusion, Aug. 2.
Like the cartoon character Dennis the Menace, U.S. President Donald Trump is making a mess of everything he touches. He promised to build a wall across the U.S.-Mexico border and make Mexico pay for it. He failed. He promised to repeal and replace former president Barack Obama’s Affordable Health Care Act. He failed. He promised to declare China a currency manipulator and impose import duties on Chinese goods. He failed. He promised to improve relations with Russia. Instead, he and his family are embroiled in an alleged collusion with Russia.
Now his aides in the White House have turned against each other to prove their loyalty to the president. Trump’s White House now resembles a Mad House.
Compared to Trump’s scandalridden seven months in power, Justin Trudeau’s year-andnine-months in office look like a breath of fresh air. Although Trudeau abandoned his pledge to reform the electoral system, his overall performance has been commendable.
He successfully resettled 25,000 Syrian refugees, addressed some long-standing concerns of Indigenous Canadians, signed the Paris Climate Change Agreement and passed a stimulus budget to improve Canada’s crumbling infrastructure. Although he has run up a budget deficit of about $40 billion, this is a small change compared to America’s trillion-dollar deficit.
It is not surprising that the editors of Rolling Stone magazine are looking up to Trudeau for inspiration and venting their frustration over the xenophobia and scandals unleashed by their own president. Mahmood Elahi, Ottawa
