Irwin wins bronze in paddling

Lindsay Irwin of the Carleton Place Canoe Club and Emily Howard of Mississaug­a collected a bronze medal in the women’s C2 1,000 metres, while Quebec’s Sophia Jensen of Chelsea and Juliette Brault of Lachine powered to a sevensecon­d-plus victory in 4:25.72 on Monday at the Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg. Irwin and Howard finished in 4:34.68.

Louis Bertrand captured the bronze medal in the men’s 800-metre freestyle timed final in 8:34.80, finishing seven 100ths of a second ahead of fourth-place finisher David Quirie of the Nepean-Kanata Barracudas Swim Club.

In women’s indoor volleyball, Ontario zipped past Prince Edward Island 25-3, 25-9, 25-10 and got by New Brunswick 25-21, 27-25, 25-20.

Ella Stewart and Mia Workman of the Ottawa Mavericks play for Ontario.

Quebec, which has Sarah McGlashan of Wakefield and Myriam Kayser-Tourigny of Gatineau on its roster, lost to New Brunswick 25-22, 16-25, 25-19, 25-18.

Ontario outlasted New Brunswick in men’s indoor volleyball (25-20, 25-20, 25-20) and Quebec downed Prince Edward Island 25-14, 25-8, 25-17. Brothers Maxime and Alexandre St-Denis and Ethan Kalef, all of Ottawa, play for Ontario, while Isaac Nesbitt of Wakefield and Alexis Tournier of Gatineau are in the Quebec lineup.

Ottawa’s Malik Bhatnagar needed only an hour to defeat Payton Nicol 6-0, 6-1 as Ontario blanked Saskatchew­an 6-0 in its mixed team tennis quarter-final.
